Aerotech Ti-Fiber Driver Shaft Review

Aerotech Ti-Fiber Driver Shaft Review

By Russ Ryden, Fit2Score, A Dallas Fort Worth Club Fitter & Club Maker
The Golf Center at the Highlands, Carrollton Texas

Aerotech steel fiber iron shafts are the only graphite shaft that have been consistently played on the tours. The shaft is unique, a thin steel wire is wrapped over a filament wound graphite core. The filament wrapping process, done correctly, creates inherently round shafts by eliminating any possibility of a sheet overlap that can occur in sheet wrapped designs. Until now, this design was limited to iron, hybrid and fairway shafts. Steel is heavy compared to graphite. Too heavy to produce a long driver shaft in the common weight ranges. That problem was overcome in the Aerotech Ti-Fiber driver shaft by using Titanium wire in place of steel.

Listen to Chris Hilleray, the owner of Aerotech explain the shaft at the 2018 PGA Merchandise show.

AeroTech CrosssectionThe TI-Fiber driver shafts wrap a braided titanium wire over a filament wound carbon fiber core. This process is explained in greater detail on the Aerotech website and explained in the Aerotech SteelFiber constant weight taper shafts review.

Oban AirBurst Golf Shaft Review

Oban AirBurst Driver Shaft Review

By Russ Ryden, Fit2Score, A Dallas Fort Worth Club Fitter & Club Maker
The Golf Center at the Highlands, Carrollton Texas

When I looked at email this morning there was an announcement from Oban that the AirBurst shaft is now available. I called Ralph for review samples and he told me the protos I had measured last year were the final versions. Much to my delight I was not going to have to spend a half day measuring shafts for the knowledge base and this review. When the TaylorMade M3 arrived in January it went into my bag. Over the last few months I have played a number of 50 gram shafts. The AirBurst was in the bag last month and between storms and cold weather it got played for a few rounds.

Over the years I have learned that light weight driver shafts are not created equal. The lighter the shaft the thinner the walls. Thin wall driver shafts without premium material play like wet noodles. You can hit them straight by slowing down your swing and waiting for the head to show up. It is like a bunt. With a little practice, you can get the ball to go straight. They are actually a good training tool if you are out of sync and need to get your feel back. But should you go after the ball, there is no telling where the head is or how it will be positioned at impact.

Then there are the premium shafts made with high density thin ply prepreg. The thin sheets let the designer use enough bias plys to stabilize torque. With enough torque, the head will be aligned with your hands at impact. Then, the light weight shafts let those of us who’s swing speeds are age challenged get our speed back. Define the term “premium light weight shaft”? In dollars, the definition has become $700+. Add a head and we have an $1100 driver. For the record, I am currently alternating between two 50 gram shafts in this price range. And I have not missed any fairways over the past two months.

Ralph and Woody start the discussion about the Oban Airburst driver shafts at the 5:15 mark on this video shot at the 2018 PGA Merchandise show.

Lets take a closer look at the Oban Airburst.

Graphite Design MAD Driver Shaft Review

By Russ Ryden, Fit2Score, A Dallas Fort Worth Club Fitter & Club Maker
The Golf Center at the Highlands, Carrollton Texas

I have recently been reviewing driver shafts in the $350 to $750 range. I was interested to see how a $180 shaft compared to the $380 Tour AD IZ also recently released. From a profile perspective these are two entirely different designs. However this search lead me to the Graphite Design YS-Six Reloaded, a $100 shaft that from a profile perspective a dead match to the IZ. An interesting find! Back to the Maximum Accuracy and Distance, while there is not a close match from Graphite Design, the profile is very popular and successful for many.

Let’s hear Bill McPherson describe the Maximum Accuracy and Distance shaft at the 2018 PGA merchandise show. The MAD discussion starts at the 5:00 mark in the video.

Mitsubishi KuroKage XD Shaft Review

Mitsubishi KuroKage XD Driver Shaft Review

By Russ Ryden, Fit2Score, A Dallas Fort Worth Club Fitter & Club Maker
The Golf Center at the Highlands, Carrollton Texas

The KuroKage XD joins the aftermarket family of KuroKage X driver shafts. This started with the KuroKage Proto TiNi several years ago. The KuroKage Proto morphed into the KuroKage XM which was simply updated graphics on a very successful shaft. Now, the KuroKage XT has been updated to the KuroKage XD.

The KuroKage XD has a dual wrap of Titanium Nickel prepreg in the tip as you can see in this image. Titanium Mickel (TiNi) is an elastic wire that immediately springs back to its original shape when stretched. It is used to increase the tip stability of the shaft. If a single wrap is good, as illustrated by multiple PGA Tour wins, Then a double wrap should be better. This is one of an array of that tip reinforcements used by Mitsubishi Chemical. The Tensei Pro White and Tensei Pro Blue have boron reinforced tips.  The Tensei Pro Orange has high density MR70 in the tip.

TrueTemper EvenFlow Red Shaft Review

By Russ Ryden, Fit2Score, A Dallas Fort Worth Club Fitter & Club Maker
The Golf Center at the Highlands, Carrollton Texas

The Project X EvenFlow line was designed for the mid swing speed range golfer. The Red is the third shaft in the series. The EvenFlow Blue and Black the mid and low launch versions were reviewed in the fall. This video was shot in January at ACCRA day at the PGA Merchandise show. We were outdoors in the wind, the video is not great, but the content is. Bill starts the discussion of the EvenFlow at the 3:30 mark.

At the time this video was shot the EvenFlow Red had not been released. Now that it is we can look at the profile and compare it to the EvenFlow Black and EvenFlow Blue.

KBS TCI Graphite Iron Shaft Review

By Russ Ryden, Fit2Score, A Dallas Fort Worth Club Fitter & Club Maker
The Golf Center at the Highlands, Carrollton Texas

Following the success of the KBS Carbon Fiber Hybrid shaft released in 2017, KBS has created light weight parallel iron shafts. Rather than me explaining the shaft, listen to Kim Braly at the PGA 2018 merchandise show discuss its development and pre release testing.

The shaft does not have a flex designation on its label. The number is the 6 iron swing speed which is your first cut and fitting the shafts. Lets take a look at the profile and data.

Fujikura Pro 2.0 Driver Shaft Review

By Russ Ryden, Fit2Score, A Dallas Fort Worth Club Fitter & Club Maker
The Golf Center at the Highlands, Carrollton Texas

The Fujikura Pro 2.0 is an update of the Fujikura Pro driver shaft that we reviewed in 2014. The Fujikura Pro 2.0 is a 2018 revision of that shafts. This profile is now available from a number fo shaft companies. Fujikura uses the term ‘loading zone’ to describe the design. That term is not new, it has been used by True Temper where I first encountered it. In my experience, it works for many golfers and is one of those designs that does, for some, deliver distance. Always remember, there is a synergy between your swing and a golf shaft. What works for your buddy’s swing will not necessarily work for your swing. Lets take a look at this profile and how it is expressed in the Fujikura Pro 2.0.

Fujikura Speeder Evolution IV Shaft Review

By Russ Ryden, Fit2Score, A Dallas Fort Worth Club Fitter & Club Maker
The Golf Center at the Highlands, Carrollton Texas

The Fujikura Speeder Evolution IV released in 2018. The review of the Evolution I was published in 2015, the Evolution III in 2017. I see the first three generations as variations on a theme. The slope of the profile got flatter from generation to generation. Flatter slopes or higher tip to butt rations tend to facilitate lower launch. The Speeder Evolution IV takes the next step in reducing launch/spin.

Fujikura Diamond Speeder Shaft Review
Fujikura Platinum Speeder Shaft Review

By Russ Ryden, Fit2Score, A Dallas Fort Worth Club Fitter & Club Maker
The Golf Center at the Highlands, Carrollton Texas

The price of premium golf shafts is no longer bound by the $360 ceiling that has been in place for the last few years. Mitsubishi, Oban, TPT and now Fujikura are producing a new generation of shafts and pricing them appropriately to cover the cost of the high density prepreg use in the shafts. The Fujikura Jewel Speeders have full length 90 ton fabric and Torayca T1100G.The price, $550 per shaft. What I see in these shafts is stiffness and torque numbers that correspond to shafts that last year were 5 to 15 grams heavier. These are the carbon fibers materials used in commercial airplanes where the strength to weight ratio matters. The shaft companies have to compete for these materials with other industries that buy vast quantities of fabric compared to the very small needs of the golf shaft business. Fujikura is offering two models, the Diamond and the Platinum that we can clearly see from the tip to butt ratios are low launch and high launch.

Mitsubishi Diamana X Golf Shaft Review

By Russ Ryden, Fit2Score, A Dallas Fort Worth Club Fitter & Club Maker
The Golf Center at the Highlands, Carrollton Texas

The Mitsubishi Diamana X is another of a small number of super shafts in the $750 plus price point. It is a white board profile, restricting it to those that are looking for a low launch, low spin shaft design. To quote Mitsubishi Chemical, “The Diamana™ X-Series continues to push the limits of golf shaft performance by taking a spare no expense approach to materials, design and innovation. The new Diamana™ X-Series utilizes our patented Multi-Dimensional Interlay (M.D.I.) construction technique, and features 90-Ton and 78-Ton DIALEAD™ Pitch Fiber angle plies combined with a full-length application of our MR70 fiber – the strongest carbon fiber in today’s market, to deliver one of the most stable, lowest torque, high-performance golf shafts Mitsubishi Chemical has ever developed.” I could not have said it any better than that, now, let’s look at the measurements to see what makes the Diamana X worth $750 to a golfer.

KBS TGI Tapered Iron Shaft Review

The parallel KBS Tour Graphite Iron, TGI shafts released earlier this year and was reviewed in May. The constant weight, taper tip version just released in July 2018. It took KBS longer than expected to get the constant weight taper profiles where they wanted them. In this video, shot in January at the PGA Merchandise Show, Kim Braly talks about the Tour Graphite iron Shafts.

Victor Afable has been in the golf business for 35 years, most of it on the shaft side. He knows golf shaft design and manufacturing. Two years ago he started his own shaft company, VA Composites. His shaft are made with Torayca prepreg as are most premium shafts. The designs are based on Victors extensive experience in the shaft business.

This video shot at the 2018 PGA Merchandise show before the Drago design had been completed.

Now that the Drago has released, let’s look at the measurements.

Now that we have the fifth generation of the Speeder Evolution one wonders if this was a marketing strategy planned at the beginning or that evolved over the years. The fundamental design has not changed,a good thing. Along the way there were subtle tweaks.

Alex Dee, the Vice President of Fujikura Golf Shafts is one of the top golf shaft techs in the business. A conversation with him is an insight into where golf shaft fitting and golf shaft design is headed. This video was shot in January 2018 at the PGA Merchandise Show.

TPT Golf Drive Shaft Review

By Russ Ryden, Fit2Score, A Dallas Fort Worth Club Fitter & Club Maker
The Golf Center at the Highlands, Carrollton Texas

TPT Golf is a division of a Swiss technology and composite firm that developed carbon fiber materials. They have produced America’s Cup yacht sails, lightweight racing car bodies, skis, snowboards, watch bodies, aircraft parts and satellite parts. They offered their prepreg to shaft companies and was told it was too expensive. Their only choice to enter the golf market was to make their own shafts. Their ultra premium shafts quickly appeared in the bags of several marque PGA players.

Tin Ply Technology (TPT) shafts have double the layers of material found in typical ultra premium shafts. They are wrapped on the mandrel on CNC winders. Most other shafts are hand rolled, much like cigars. TPT makes the prepreg ribbon and can orientate the fiber direction in the ribbon. That creates a uniquely new method of creating golf shafts. They can adjust shaft properties in unique ways to adjust shaft performance. I have been to the Swiss R&D site demonstrating the process of EI measurement with my instrument and software.

This video was shot on the closing afternoon of the 2018 PGA Merchandise Show. Jeff Meyer, one of the top shaft designers in the business explains some of the TPT technology.

Let’s take a look at the Low Kick Point and Mid Kick Point profiles.

The Graphite Design Tour AD VR driver shaft released in late 2018. Graphite Design Tour AD Iron Shaft Review

By Russ Ryden, Fit2Score, A Dallas Fort Worth Club Fitter & Club Maker
Golf Center at the Highlands, Carrollton TX, A Golf Digest Top 100 Club Fitting Studio

I have fit almost exclusively with steel iron shafts for many, many years. When I built EI measuring instruments I checked shaft to shaft consistency in graphite iron shafts. I would not build with what I saw. When some premium shafts came to market last year I checked set consistency and saw what I most always see in steel. consistent profiles through out the sets. Furthermore, I saw steel like stiffness and torque in much lower weight shafts. Now that I am at an age where weight matters the stiffness to weight ratio of premium carbon fiber iron shafts got my attention.

The Graphite Design Tour AD Iron shafts are not a new product. But my renewed interest in Carbon Fiber iron shafts prompted me to ask for review samples. They came, multiple shafts in 11 different weight / stuffiness models. It took quite some time to measure them. The good news, as you can see in this chart, the profiles inside the sets are consistent. They generally have the same stiffness as steel that is 20 grams heavier. These shafts are worthy of the Graphite Design Tour AD brand. Lets take a close look at the specifications.
