Project X Catalyst Golf Shaft Review

By Russ Ryden, Fit2Score, A Dallas Fort Worth Club Fitter & Club Maker
The Golf Center at the Highlands, Carrollton Texas
Golf Digest Certified America’s 100 Best Clubfitters

The Project X Catalyst, released in late 2018, is available in parallel and constant weight taper models. The lighter weights are parallel, the 80 and 100 models are taper. But, there is overlap, there is an 80 parallel. You can identify the tapers by the small CW on the shaft label to the right of the weight designation as shown here. The parallel profile is quite different from the Constant Weight Tapers. In this review we will look at both the Parallel Catalyst and the Constant Weight Taper Catalyst.

True Temper Elevate Pro Golf Shaft Review

By Russ Ryden, Fit2Score, A Dallas Fort Worth Club Fitter & Club Maker
The Golf Center at the Highlands, Carrollton Texas
Golf Digest Certified America’s 100 Best Clubfitters

The True Temper Elevate was designed to launch the ball higher than it counterpart, the Dynamic Gold 120. Bill Lange explains the Elevate in this video shot at the PGA Merchandise show the year the Elevate was launched.

The Elevate is a traditional “Dynamic” design. The length from the shaft tip to the first step changes with flex. R Flex has a long tip section, S shorter and X shortest. There is also small increase in weight as stiffness increases. This image illustrates how that tip length changes the EI bend profile of the shafts. Lets take a close look at how this dual change in profile and weight influence stiffness and set makup.

Fujikura Ventus Shaft Review

By Russ Ryden, Fit2Score, A Dallas Fort Worth Club Fitter & Club Maker
The Golf Center at the Highlands, Carrollton Texas
Golf Digest Certified America’s 100 Best Clubfitters

Fujikura tells us the Ventus driver shaft is made with full length Pitch 70 Ton Carbon Fiber material that is 150% stronger than Toray T1100g. T1100g is used in many premium driver shafts. In the Ventus, the 70 ton full length fiberis combined with 40 Ton Carbon Fiber to minimizes twisting. We here from them that high torque creates dispersion. The design of the Ventus is low tip torque to decrease dispersion. Years of fitting experience validate this torque observation. The stock shafts in most drivers have higher torque than the shaft upgrades offered by both the club companies and aftermarket fitters.

We know that very low torque shafts feel boardy. That can be mitigated by having a low torque tip combined with a higher torque mid and but. The tip resists twist at impact while the higher torque in the mid and butt restore feel.

KBS $-Taper Lite Iron Shaft Review

By Russ Ryden, Fit2Score, A Dallas Fort Worth Club Fitter & Club Maker
The Highlands Performance Golf Center, Carrollton Texas
Golf Digest Certified America’s 100 Best Club Fitter

Following the success of the KBS C-Taper Lite, KBS now offers a Lite version of the $-Taper. It comes in three weights, 95, 100 and 105. The profiles are nearly identical to the $-Taper. The three weights offered are less than the $-Taper 110 gram R. The $-Taper Lite weights, in my experience, are a perfect fit for the recreational golfer.

If you do not follow my YouTube Channel, Devoted Golfer, you may have missed this video. We shot the 2019 KBS presentation to golf club fitters at the PGA Merchandise show. It covers the entire product line. After the slide show, Kim Braly comes to the podium and talks about tour acceptance of 2018 KBS shafts and the new 2019 shafts.

As you can see in this table, the weighs of the $-Taper Lite extend the weight range of the $-Taper.   This is different than the C-Taper Lite and the C-Taper where there is an overlap with the C-Taper R and R+.

Mitsubishi Tensei Pro Red Golf Shaft Review

Mitsubishi Tensei Pro Red Golf Shaft Review

By Russ Ryden, Fit2Score, A Dallas Fort Worth Club Fitter & Club Maker
Highlands Performance Golf Center, Carrollton Texas

The last profile added to the Mitsubishi Chemical Tensei Pro family of driver shafts is the Tensei Pro Red. Like the other Tensei Pro driver shafts I has a carbon Fiber Kevlar woven material place just below the hands. As you can see in the chart, this material substantially  increases hoop strength in this area of the shaft. Hoop deformation in carbon fiber golf shafts is a function of wall thickness. The wall thickness in the butt end of a golf shaft is thin. Therefore the shaft deforms more. This has classical be called ovaling. Ovaling is thought to create dispersion. I have seen various materials use in this area to stabilize driver shafts. I have never seen as dramatic an effect on hoop deformation as I see in the Tensei Pro. Take note, the OEM shafts have only 4″ of this material which is little more than cosmetics. The Tensei Pro models have 11+” and the hoop deformation profiles are dramatically lower in this area.

Aldila XTorsion Copper & XTorsion Green  Shaft Review

By Russ Ryden, Fit2Score, A Dallas Fort Worth Club Fitter & Club Maker
The Highlands Performance Golf Center, Carrollton Texas
Golf Digest Certified America’s 100 Best Club Fitter

The Aldila Xtorsion driver shaft have a clearly visible woven material in the lower half of the shafts. Aldila calls the material, MAMBA, Multi-Axial Material Bias Angle technology. It is woven at a 45 degree angle which provides torsional stability to the lower half of the shaft where it is most important. This can be seen in the GJ or torsional profile of the shafts. The GJ profile tips downward from the mid section to the tip. I also see high and stable hoop strength resulting from the woven material. This is similar to the woven section of the Mitsubishi Tensei Pro shafts that is located just below the grip. When I look at the Xtorsion Copper EI profile I am reminded of the very popular EI profile of the Nippon Modus 120’s.

Nippon 123 Driver Fitting System Review

By Russ Ryden, Fit2Score, A Dallas Fort Worth Club Fitter & Club Maker
The Highlands Performance Golf Center, Carrollton Texas
Golf Digest Certified America’s 100 Best Club Fitter

Most reviews here are focused on a single shaft model. The Nippon 123 system is three shafts brought to market as a fitting system. There are three profiles, each with an array of stiffness and weight. This is a fitting system that will soon be accompanied by documentation to guide the fitter using it. Mark Pekarek has been fitting over 35 years. Much of that time his company, Shaftology has been the distributor for Nippon shafts in the US. When I started with Nippon, Shaftology was the only source for Nippon shafts in America. Their distributors were regionally placed and had to demonstrate their golf competence as representative of the Nippon brand. Before you look at the data I recommend you watch this video shot at the 2019 PGA Merchandise show where the system was announced to the golf business.

This is the first time, to my knowledge, that a set of shafts has been designed and presented as a fitting system. Those of us with ample fitting experience have put together our own mix of fitting shafts. It takes years of experience and access to a comprehensive database of shaft properties to outfit a fitting cart for systematic fitting. As Mark said, the profiles in this system are different enough to make a difference to the average golfer.

Mitsubishi Chemical Tensei AV Blue Driver Shaft Review

By Russ Ryden, Fit2Score, A Dallas Fort Worth Club Fitter & Club Maker
The Highlands Performance Golf Center, Carrollton Texas
Golf Digest Certified America’s 100 Best Club Fitter

The Tensei AV is the successor to the Tensei CK. There were two versions of the Mitsubishi Tensei golf shaft, now there are three. My understanding is that the AV series will replace the CK series. The Tensei CK, like the Tensei Pro CK has a Carbon Fiber/DuPont™ Kevlar® (CK) weave just below the grip. This material dramatically reduces hoop deformation in the critical section of the what were wall thickness is thin. The Pro CK version has three times the length of this woven material as the OEM, CK version. Measurements and hitting experience shot a dramatic shot dispersion from stabilizing this section of the shaft with the long woven section of the Pro version. The shot dispersion effect from the 4″ section in the OEM version is not as dramatic.

The Tensei AV changes this. The woven section is the same length as we see in the Tensei Pro. The woven material is different. This video was cut out of a longer interview. The second camera was out of focus, but the explanation of the AV technology was to good to ignore.

The 2018 Aldila Synergy is the first golf shaft I know of to incorporate Graphene. What exactly does this material, that is one atom thick bring, to golf shafts. I looked it up at Wikipedia and learned that it earned its early researchers a Nobel Prize in 2010. Golf is not the first sports application, Head put in into tennis rackets in 2015. They are played by the worlds best tennis players. The racket reviews tell us that they bring new levels of stability to the racket frame.

KBS MAX Shaft Review

By Russ Ryden, Fit2Score, A Dallas Fort Worth Club Fitter & Club Maker

Golf Digest Certified America’s 100 Best Club Fitter

KBS continues to make graphite iron shafts. KBS started with a very popular Hybrid shaft. The KBS TGI iron shaft launched the following year and again was very successful on the professional tours. I noted in the review otf the TGI shaft that it was as stiff as the stiffest of the KBS steel shafts albeit 20 grams lighter. The KBS MAX is targeted to the recreational golfer.

The discussion about KBS graphite iron shafts starts at 19:25. The audio dropouts remove professional player names. You will hear Kim Braly talk about the target golfer for the KBS MAX.

Aerotech hls Hybrid Golf Shaft Review

This measurements for this review were done a long time ago. For some reason they never got published. The AeroTech SteelFiber his hybrid shafts, like most AeroTech products are still in production, unchanged over 5+ years. For a custom club fitter this is a very good thing. The fitter that invests time learning them and money for fitters gets a return on these investments. To his everlasting credit, Chris Hilleray does not often change his models. The old saying, “if it works don’t fix it” comes to mind. Tour acceptance has proven the AeroTech SteelFiber works.

In a recent video Chris Hilleray, president of AeroTech explains the construction of the SteelFiber Golf Shaft. If you do not know the story of how the SteelFiber is made, he tells it better than I can.

Project X HZRDUS Smoke Yellow Shaft Review

By Russ Ryden, Fit2Score, A Dallas Fort Worth Club Fitter & Club Maker
The Highlands Performance Golf Center, Carrollton Texas
Golf Digest Certified America’s 100 Best Club Fitter

Looking at the EI profile of the Project X HZRDUS Smoke Yellow is like meeting an old friend you have not seen in a while. It is in many ways an updated of the Project X Loading Zone shaft. For the right golfer it added ball flight height without adding spin. It was a great fit for negative angle of attacks, a long time issue with my own swing. I was sorry to see it get discontuned, and I am quite happy to see the HZRDUS Smoke Yellow replace the most popular of the various profiles that were in the Loading Zone matrix.

the HZRDUS Smoke Yellow is not a remake of the HZRDUS Yellow, they are different.

The Aldila Quaranta shafts are light weigh only, reminding me of the Ultra Light Mitsubishi Bassara shafts. So many other shaft designs have been extended down to the 50 gram range that I have moved away from fitting with Ultra Light models. The tip stiffness and torque of the Sapphire are impressive.
This video was shot at the 2019 PGA Merchandise show outdoors on demo day were the grass grows and the wind blows. Aldila 2KVX NV Blue Driver Shaft Review

By Russ Ryden, Fit2Score, A Dallas Fort Worth Club Fitter & Club Maker
The Highlands Performance Golf Center, Carrollton Texas
Golf Digest Certified America’s 100 Best Club Fitter

The Aldila 2KVX-NV series is popular with many of club fitters. While it is reasonably priced it does not sacrifice quality or performance. The NV Blue got overlooked when I reviewed the Orange and Green 2KVX-NV Driver Shafts. Aldila shafts are designed in fitting families. The 2KVX-NV follows that tradition.

the 2KVX-NV Blue is the mid launch member of the series. It is made of thin layers of high strength fiber. Those thin layers allowed Aldila engineers to craft linear designs without compromising torque or hoop strength of the shaft.

Oban CT-125 Iron Shaft Review

By Russ Ryden, Fit2Score, A Dallas Fort Worth Club Fitter & Club Maker
The Highlands Performance Golf Center, Carrollton Texas
Golf Digest Certified America’s 100 Best Club Fitter

The Oban CT-125 is the last of the weights that will be made in this model. It joins the previously reviewed CT-100 and CT-115, completing the fitting matrix of the series. Each weight has 11 shafts from which the club builder can select a subset to build a set. The extended range allows for fine tuning stiffness by “soft stepping” or “hard stepping”. This is not exactly the correct term for this design, but it is a concept you may be familiar with. Building a set of 8 shafts from the 11 available allows for three steps in either the soft or hard direction. A smaller set of 6 or 7 irons adds more stiffness options. Most other constant weight shaft brands produce 8 or 9 shafts in a model matrix.

If you do not follow my YouTube Channel, Devoted Golfer, this was shot at the 2019 PGA Merchandise show. Ralph Reichart, owner of Oban talks about briefly about the extrusion process used by Shimada to make the CT series of iron shafts.

UST Mamiya Recoil ESX Shaft Review

It has been some time since I measured a set of UST Mamiya Recoil iron shafts. UST does not make review samples available and the last time I did measure a set of constant weight taper Recoils I did not see consistent profiles through the set. Updates to a fitting cart that arrived a few weeks ago included the Recoil ESX. I ordered a set of irons that were getting custom shafted with uncut ESX shafts to get an updated look at set consistency. I pulled the shafts and measured them. I was suprised with what I saw.

The 2KXV NV is not a new shaft. I measured the Orange and Green models in 2016 according to my notes. I did not measure the 2KXV Blue and therefore never published the review. In looking through shafts that had not been reviewed I was sent the review shafts with the 2KXV Blue Driver Shafts. Many of my fitting friends work with these shafts. From what I see in the measurements they are one of the best deals in the market.
